About Kyoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu

Literally translated from Japanese, means "the school of open-mindedness". The Kyoshin Ryu curriculum is comprehensive both technically and spiritually. Founded by Soke Shawn F. Rodie, Kyoshin Ryu shares similar attributes with other Jiu-Jitsu styles yet the method of teaching and application of techniques make it a distinct Ryu with a focus on preserving traditional Japanese values. A COMPLETE ART OF SELF DEFENSE!

"Kyoshin Ryu is a martial arts style emphasizing practical self defense and efficacy, rather than digressing into aesthetics, mysticism, or slavish adherence to 'tradition'..." - Sempai Marcus Pivato, Shodan, Kyoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu.

SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUES INVOLVING:
Grappling - Throwing - Punching/Kicking
Joint Locks - Breakfalls - Weapons

The Innovations of Kyoshin Ryu can be summarized in six points:

1. Techniques are conducted from 45 degrees.
2. Move toward the opponent's blind side.
3. Keep moving in the same direction.
4. Train with the assumption that opponents are bigger and stronger than you.
5. Train with the assumption that you are outnumbered.
6. Train with the assumption that conditions for combat will be far from ideal!

Historical Background

JuJutsu or Jiu-Jitsu as taught today encompasses empty-handed self-defense techniques developed from the centuries old military arts (bujutsu) of the Japanese Samurai Warriors. Though the history of Jiu-Jitsu may well be considered to have begun in the second or first centuries BC, its renaissance or 'golden age' was during the Tokugawa era (1603--1867 AD).

The term Jiu-Jitsu, formulated in the Tokugawa era, translates to the art of yielding, softness, subtleness or pliability. From Bujutsu and the influence of Zen, Aikido, Judo and Karatedo evolved.

From these historical influences, Kyoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu was founded in Toronto, Canada by
Soke Shawn F. Rodie as a complete martial art.

Kyoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu

Literally translated from Japanese, Kyoshin Ryu means "the school of open mindedness". The Kyoshin Ryu curriculum is comprehensive both technically and spiritually. Technically, it is both percussive (employing striking techniques) and non-percussive (employing throwing, locking and grappling). Some of the defining technical features of Kyoshin Ryu are:

- No preparatory stances
- Attacks are made in the most advantageous positions
- Equal importance of left and right-handed techniques
- Use of circling and angular movements for attacks and defense
